I can't quite recall how the chicken came to be, but I think either Karen or Joseph introduced this little hen into the family last Christmas. Whatever it's origin, he keeps showing up unexpectedly. Someone (Joseph maybe?) assisted the little birdie in traveling to Atlanta. It took Marie three days to spot our feathered friend perched on her bookcase. Thanksgiving means turkey, so it was safe for the chicken to fly the Brumbauch coop and land at Romayne's for a quick stop and then on to Karen's. Needless to say, dirty Santa brings out the hen in all of us (cluck, cluck)--Uncle Frank, after many gifts slipping through his fingers, found his prize. Alan, Linda, Stephanie, & Sarah, unsuspecting participants in the poultry pass, had a big surprise waiting for them in the backseat of their car Christmas night (or should we say the morning of the 26th?). You should have heard those Tuttle girls squeal. Funny!! Instead of taking the bird home, they seemed to have forgotten the little beast next to our mailbox down by the road. Hmmm.... Well after pondering the fate of the creature (fried, soup, sandwich, enchiladas, etc) I couldn't bear to end her life. I've decided that...
Into this box she must stow
Time will tell where she will go.
If she should end up on your stoop
Please welcome her into your family's coop.
When you feel the time is right
You may pass her on with great delight.

PS Could we please give this poor bird a name?

wow--a poet and didn't know it. After 17 years, you still amaze me and make me smile! Great post!!!!
As for a name, hmmmmm?
How about: Henpecked. . . .er, sorry freudian slip :-)
How about: HennyPenny (no the sky isn't falling) or "HENrietta"; or Chickita? Ok, not my best work . . . . I am sure GM and DS will weigh in soon.
hmmmm, naming the chicken huh. Can we do this without being moderated.
I don't know about the girls names as I think it's a rooster judging by the comb on its head. I say we go simple, how does Pollo sound?
In case you want to get creative, here is a link to pet chicken names:

Thank you Joseph for clearing up the rooster vs. hen dilemma. I wondered about him being a rooster myself. I knew we could count on a good FFA boy to clear things up. I guess we could call him "Dude Looks Like a Lady"--
Du-lila for short? That's a bit of a stretch huh?
I thought it was originally called "little JP" - after it's "daddy"...however, I think a new name is in order too...why can't we just call her a "chick"? Guess that's a little gender politically incorrect...wait, political poultry...how about Polly the PI Chick??? PPIC
PS...Plugknocker should like that since he was a "poli-sci" liberal arts major at VU!!! Polly....I like it, but in this very democratic society where the majority (albeit lately in the "real" (ha ha) political arena), the majority has shown a complete late of sense. If that's politically incorrect...waahhhh
How bout Popcorn the chicken.
get it?
The bird is on the move, I repeat, the bird is on the move. Or should I say...the popcorn is poppin'?
...received a suspicious package today which contained a creature that strangely resembles the beautiful specimen of poultry that stood proudly on the Williams's mailbox just a few days ago.
"Bandit", as we lovingly refer to it, is standing guard over my collection of Jerry Reed albums until we call a family meeting to determine it's fate.
...more to come
Anonymous...just a hunch but by chance are you a Tuttle? Bandit is such a lucky little bird to be welcomed into such a warm and loving family. I know you will love and cherish him for many years. :) Maybe Linda could take him to the preschool for show and tell.
