The 'Ol Underwear on the Head Trick
Monday was the day I was summoned to appear for jury duty. I picked Gabe up from school early to take him with me for fear I would not make it back to pick him up after school. We arrive with two minutes to spare and had to sit in the front row. They ask us to stand, raise our right hand and swear us in. I see the bailiff and court clerk grinning at us, and I glance at Gabe to see him standing at attention with his right hand raised. Very cute. After filling 10 panels of 12 jurors each, Gabe and I still sat quietly. It was down to me and one other and they called my name, we approached the bench were I explained that while I am not trying to shirk my civic responsibility, I have 3 children that depend on me for care as well as transportation to several events and could I be deferred until a later time when my children are more independent. The judge asks, "How old ar your children?", I respond with "6, 11, and 13". Gabe's little voice pipes up with..."Jacob is 14". I then have to explain that he just had a birthday at the end of April and I am not yet used to referring to his new age. (Geat, now I sound like I'm lying.) Anyway, I didn't have to be reduced to wearing underwear on my head and singing "That's the sound of the man workin' on the chain gang..." in order to be defered thankfully. A word of advice to all of you with small children who tend to fidget, if you lean down and whisper in their ear, "You know that judge can throw us in jail if we don't sit still and listen" works like a charm.

I was just thinking that if I get called to jury duty maybe I can borrow some kids to take to court with me, 6 or 7 should do the trick.
Awe.........the joys of motherhood! I always wondered if anyone else's children, threw cogs in the wheels at unopertune times! ! We try to teach our children to be honest and then ....wham-0 ! ! I've been called only one time for jury duty and everyspot was filled before my name was called. I would love to take your place. Think they would notice?
OK, I mispelled a word a second ago, but I do know how to spell it! ! ! My fingers just don't work well with my brain!
One more word and I am gone. The P A P signature means I paint houses !
Somehow I missed the meaning of the "ol underwear on the head trick"...may have to go back and re-read....
It's a shame you didn't get a trial where you could write a book and get millions...I know we could spend that in Costa Rica!!
